Ethics and Clinical Governance
Independent Ethics Committee (IEC)
The Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) operates autonomously under the Falcon Healthcare Group and under the chairmanship of Dr Zouberr Joomaye has been a cornerstone of clinical research governance in Mauritius for over 12 years. It is the first and only private ethics body in the country recognized for reviewing and approving clinical research protocols with the highest integrity.
To date, the IEC has reviewed more than 200 research protocols — each cleared with a remarkable success rate — earning the trust of international Contract Research Organizations (CROs) such as Centre International de Développement Pharmaceutique, EUROFINS, and Cap Research.
Core Mandate
The IEC’s fundamental role is to protect the rights, safety, and well-being of research participants, ensuring all clinical trials are conducted in strict compliance with the Clinical Trials Act 2011 and globally recognized ethical standards.
Responsibilities of the IEC
- Review and approval of clinical research protocols, informed consent forms, and associated documentation before study initiation
- Ensuring research designs are ethically sound and participant risk is minimal and justified
- Verifying that participants are fully informed and have given voluntary consent
- Preserving independence from sponsors to uphold objective and unbiased ethical review
